 Introduction to the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act

When:            Wednesday, July 27, 2011 // 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM 

Where:           SAIF, 1500 SW First Ave, Suite 200, Portland, OR 97201 

 Objective:     Upon completion, attendees will be familiar with the history of the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (Longshore Act), the legal context of the Longshore Act, coverage under the Longshore Act with reference to the issues of situs and status, be familiar with correct rating codes for risks with Longshore Act exposures, be able to determine compensation benefits payable under the Longshore Act, identify and be able to use the Longshore Act’s claims terminology, and know the correct forms and procedures involved when a claim occurs.  Jurisdictional problems related to overlap with the Jones Act and concurrent state act jurisdiction will also be discussed.

Dear CPCU Colleagues:

  2011-2012 is shaping up to be an exciting time for our Chapter. We have assembled a great schedule of luncheon's and activities for you and I hope that you agree. We had a fun social event in October at Big Al's, it shapedup to be our spookiest event. It's was agood excuse to check out a fun, new place.

 This is the start of our opportunity to continue to recognize our newest members and continue to bring in new members to the CPCU family. As you know, our membership faces significant challenges due to a large percentage of our membership retiring in the next 10 years.

 With this in mind, we need you to bring associate members and those interested in starting the CPCU journey, to all meetings and functions. Please reach out to your colleagues, I challenge each member to bring at least 3 guests this year. The chapter will pick up the tab for these guests.

Our annual holiday party is being held December 9, 2011 at the University Club in Portland.

Loaves and Fishes is our designated charity so be sure to bring your donations. The Chapter Officers have thrown down the challenge  to the members that the chapter would match up to $500 for member donations.

Dinner at the Blue Monster

Dale Thomas and Linda Rooke attended the annual National Leadership Summit at Doral in Miami, Florida.

Their purpose was to attend leadership workshops and meet with members of other chapters.  They brought back several new ideas for the coming year.

Our Chapter leaders will be working with Cass Cossairt, our Area Governor, as well as leaders from the Seattle, North Washington/Idaho and Central Idaho chapters.  We want to work together as a group for our 2011 All Industry Day.
